“I am fortunate to be a credentialed art teacher at a free public charter school. Our school is unique, operating as a project-based cooperative, and I’m proud to say I’ve been one of the founding teachers. After 14 years, I’ve developed a thriving art program that has positively impacted many students. However, with a tight budget and families that aren’t wealthy, we make the most of what we have. My students respect the materials we have and are always excited about new technologies.
What sets my art program apart is that it’s choice-based, meaning students direct their own projects based on their interests. This approach differs from traditional art programs because we treat children as artists and allow them to pursue what excites them. Each student sets personal goals and explores their chosen art form, growing their skills and artistic consciousness.
Recently, our school updated some of the technology in my classroom, and the students have been thrilled! However, there’s still more to be done. We need additional tools to fully unlock their creative potential. Right now, I’m asking for an iPad to support a team of students interested in stop-motion filmmaking. With the right technology, we can take their projects to the next level.”
