As we shake off the last remnants of “winter” and dive into spring here in San Diego, it’s essential to ensure our kids are equipped with valuable water safety lessons. That’s why Big Box Storage is excited to sponsor April Pools Day, a fun-filled water safety festival hosted by Bud Kearns Pool on Morley Field Drive.

A Day of Fun and Learning

April Pools Day is all about promoting water safety education in a family-friendly environment. This free event invites families to come out and enjoy a day at the pool while learning vital skills that can save lives. The pool will be open at no charge, giving everyone the chance to take a dip and have some fun in the sun!

Throughout the day, attendees can explore a variety of interactive booths set up on the pool deck. These booths are designed to educate families about water safety while providing engaging activities for kids and adults alike. From meeting Josh the Otter—the friendly mascot dedicated to teaching children about water safety—to participating in games and crafts in the KidsZone, there will be something for everyone.

Learn Essential Water Safety Skills

In addition to the fun activities, families will have the opportunity to learn essential water safety skills. There will be demonstrations on how to perform CPR, ensuring that parents and caregivers know how to react in case of an emergency. This is a crucial skill that can make a significant difference in saving lives.

The event will also feature giant inflatables, allowing kids to play and enjoy themselves while getting accustomed to being in and around water. Free sunscreen will be provided to help keep everyone safe from harmful UV rays while they enjoy their time outdoors.

In recent weeks, our coastal neighbors to the east have faced a series of devastating natural disasters that have resulted in catastrophic losses. Countless families have been uprooted, left with little more than the remnants of what were once their homes. Yet, in these tumultuous times, we often find that adversity brings people together. As individuals and businesses reach out for help, it’s heartwarming to see communities respond with kindness and generosity.

In the wake of these disasters, many people have stepped up to provide aid. Residents loaded their boats and headed east with supplies, shelters welcomed hundreds of displaced pets, and millions of dollars were raised to support those in need in the affected areas. The call for help did not go unanswered.

A group of local community members, including Lisa Vidaurri from The Foundry Church in Escondido, organized a shipment of essential supplies. Their efforts included collecting a variety of items, from household goods like cleaning products, gloves, and trash bags to construction tools and machinery. When they approached us for assistance in getting these vital supplies to Houston, we were more than happy to help.

In just a few days, The Foundry’s sister church in Houston will receive not only diapers and dog food but also a message of hope. This shipment symbolizes the strength of community spirit and the determination to rebuild in the face of adversity. The supplies sent will help families in need get back on their feet, providing them with the essential items necessary for recovery.

The efforts of organizations like The Foundry Church demonstrate how local communities can come together to make a significant impact during times of crisis. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference in someone’s life.

About My Students:

I teach a wonderfully diverse group of kids from various backgrounds and financial situations. Each student comes with their own unique challenges, but they all share one thing in common: a drive to succeed. Some need extra help, but they’re all eager to learn and achieve their goals.

It’s my greatest joy to see each student reach their potential. I work hard every day to show them that learning can be exciting and that they’re worth every bit of effort it takes to help them master new skills.

My Project:

My students are absolutely crazy about science! Last year, I was thrilled to see even the kids who weren’t initially interested in science become enthusiastic learners. They’ll devour anything science-related!

The books I’m hoping to get will support the 5th grade Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These standards dive deep into science, encouraging kids to ask questions and seek out answers. The books will show them different types of scientists at work and help them understand the world around them. I want them to see how science connects to everything and get excited about exploring it further.”

“My students need wiggle chairs to help with their energy levels and focus.

My Students

This project will support 11 military special needs students, all between 5 and 8 years old, who have lots of energy and wiggles. Our classroom is specifically for moderate to severe special needs children, and all of my students come from military families. Many of them are not only navigating their disabilities but also coping with the anxiety and emotions that come with having a parent deployed.

In class, these wiggle chairs have shown to be incredibly effective at calming their behavior and emotions, helping them feel more grounded while their loved ones are away.

My Project

My students face challenges like ADHD, ADD, and other disabilities that make focusing on learning difficult. Wiggle chairs give them the movement they need to calm their bodies and emotions, allowing them to better concentrate and absorb what’s being taught. These chairs are essential for our special needs students, helping them move in ways that allow them to access the modified curriculum they need.”

“I teach a group of amazing first and second graders from diverse backgrounds, experiences and abilities. They all have big hearts and an extraordinary capacity to understand and relate to the feelings others who are different. They have been working together all year to learn about our 5 senses, and how they help us engage with and comprehend the people and world around us. We are now focused on ways to *use our sense of sight to look deeper* and *learn more* about each other, ourselves, and our community.” 

“Students are gaining information, skills and experiences that connect them to the anatomy of their eyes, the many applications of vision in science and math, and the diversity in concepts of beauty in art, literature, and culture. Most importantly, they are learning not to judge something or someone by first appearance and their writings and illustrations reflect this important concept. My students are truly wonderful artists and need more supplies as they explore and undertake different techniques and genres. They love to paint, but we only have enough tabletop easels for part of the class, and need 14 more so everyone can create together.”

“It would be fabulous to provide at least one real canvas per student for a final masterpiece, but this is not possible without outside support. Art and drawing supplies like paint, brushes, mini pallets, watercolor paper and colored pencils are in great need as well. I believe that school is a magical place where any student can become a “mastermind,” brilliant creator, awesome author, super scientist, excellent engineer, and much more. I try to make everyday a part of an ongoing journey where the love of learning is celebrated and has no limits.”
